Firing Service Coverage

Firing Service Insurance for Ceramic Studios

When you offer kiln firing services to outside artists — loading and firing work you didn't create — you take on significant liability for that artwork. Standard general liability policies contain a "care, custody, and control" exclusion that specifically removes coverage for customer property in your possession. Firing service coverage fills this critical gap.

Firing Service Coverage Scenarios

Customer Artwork Loss
A customer's ceramic pieces are destroyed in a kiln malfunction or firing error.
Thermal Shock Damage
Customer work cracks or explodes due to rapid temperature changes during firing.
Glaze Failure
Glazes run, bleed, or stick to shelves — damaging the customer's work and your kiln furniture.
Temperature Overfiring
Controller malfunction causes the kiln to overfire, destroying customer work.
Handling Damage
Customer artwork is chipped, broken, or damaged while in your studio.
Bailee Coverage
Broad "bailee" liability for all customer property in your care, custody, and control.

The Care, Custody & Control Gap

Standard general liability policies contain explicit exclusions for property "in the care, custody, or control" of the insured. This means if you're holding a customer's artwork and it's damaged — whether through kiln failure, mishandling, or any other cause — your GL policy won't pay.

For studios offering firing services, this exclusion is a critical gap. The solution is a separate "bailee coverage" or "care, custody, and control" extension that specifically covers customer property on your premises.

Coverage amounts are typically set based on the maximum value of customer work in your studio at any time. We work with you to set appropriate limits and deductibles for your firing service volume.
